Often monochrome or black & white laser printers provide you with the best combination of quality and cost-efficiency. This is particularly true when it comes to office use and you don’t need to print in color. In her guide to the best laser printers for home and office, Harpreet Singh looked at a few offerings under 5,000(INR) from HP and Canon. This time we’d like to go over a few of the best choices for cost-effective monochrome laser printers for home and office use.
HP LaserJet ProM15w
HP’s monochrome laser printer is one of the smallest printers available today and weighs less than 4 kilograms. With print speeds of 19 ppm and a 150-sheet capacity, the HP LaserJet ProM15w has your black and white printing needs covered. It’s also more economical to run than an inkjet colour printer and will last longer. While monochrome laser printers have a higher initial cost than inkjet printers, Tom’s Guide explains they will save you money in the long run as their cost per page is lower. The savings add up, especially if your office printing volumes are high. In this sense, a post by HP on picking the perfect printer advises anyone shopping for printers with added capabilities that it can increase the costs of both purchase and operation, which is why black and white only units are generally cheaper than ones that can print in colour. Aside from being economical to run the LaserJet ProM15w offers 600×600 dpi printing and also comes with mobile printing capabilities and Wi-Fi connectivity.

With excellent print quality and a print speed of 36 ppm, the Lexmark B2236dw is a fast and efficient compact laser printer with duplex printing. With secure network connectivity, it allows you to log into its web interface and restrict printing and admin access to user or departments, making it a great choice for an office. Among its features for cost-effectiveness is a separate drum, rated for over 12,000 prints, and a toner cartridge rated for up to 6,000. This means that you’ll only be replacing the drum unit every two toner cartridges, which is acceptable but not the best in class, in terms of running costs.
Price: $180 (INR12,847)
The Brother HL-L2300D is a fast, low-cost printer perfect for the home or a small office. As the least expensive printer on this list, it offers a nmonochrome laser with duplex (two-sided) printing capability.
Also highly compact, it prints at a sharp 2400×600 dpi and provides excellent, easy to read crisp printouts at 27 pages per minute. PC Mag’s David Stone recommends the Brother HL-L2300D saying how despite its low price it delivers a level of paper handling that would be suitable for sharing. In addition, it’s fast speed and print quality made it the Editor’s Choice for low-cost monochrome printing.

Canon ImageCLASS LBP214dw
As the most expensive monochrome laser printer on this list, the Canon ImageCLASS LBP214dw has an incredible 900-sheet maximum tray capacity and a fast 40 ppm printing. Unlike most other compacts it can also handle paper sizes up to 8.5 x 14 inches which provides some flexibility when you need to print legal sized documents.
One unique feature is the ability to connect the included microphone to use Canon’s PCvoiceLink technology to control the printer via voice command. It also supports wired or wireless connectivity and a USB port which allows for printing directly from a thumb drive or other source.
